Pennsylvania is perennially among the top spots in the country for hunting. It's no surprise really -- considering the sheer breadth of forest, state game lands, parks, and other areas open to hunting during the appropriate seasons.
What you might not know is that near the end of the 19th century, many species such as deer, bear, and wild turkey were faced with near-extinction. That's why the precursor to the Pennsylvania Game Commission was founded in 1895. The result: With only a few exceptions, wildlife in the commonwealth is more abundant now than at the turn of the century. So now, hunters flock to Pennsylvania during the numerous hunting seasons.
